Since its establishment in 1989, NICHE has progressed through academic recognition, university status, research initiatives, technology development and institutional partnerships. 1989

Year of Starting

Noorul Islam College of Engineering began its journey.

2002–2003

Early Development

A period marked in the institutional growth timeline.

2003

Science Awards

Popularization of Science Awards by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

2006

Research Recognition

Four departments recognized as research centres for Ph.D. programmes by Anna University.

2007

NBA Accreditation

Accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

2008

Deemed-to-be-University

Declared Deemed-to-be-University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.

2013–2014

Best B-School Award

Recognized with the Best B-School Award.

2015–2016

Accreditation & Rankings

Accredited by NAAC.
75th rank in the University category.
66th rank in the Engineering Institution category.

2017

NIUSAT Student Satellite

Designed and developed a 15 kg student satellite, NIUSAT, successfully launched on 23 June 2017.

2018

NICHE Cloud

Established state-of-the-art on-campus private cloud infrastructure — NICHE Cloud.

2019

Robotics

Commissioned a fully functional humanoid robot.

2019–2021

International Partnership

Indo-Israel Student Satellite Partnership and Green University accreditation initiative.

2022

NAAC Re-accreditation

Re-accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (Cycle 2).

2023

15 Years of Deemed University Status

NICHE celebrated 15 years of university status and inaugurated the 2023–2024 academic year on 4 September 2023. The university also highlighted progress in patents, research publications, courses and extension activities.

2024

Research & Innovation Growth

NICHE's Institution's Innovation Council began incubating a start-up in February 2024.
The university reported 15 active international MoU collaborations.
Major–minor degree options were being implemented from the 2024–2025 academic year.

2025

Academic Excellence & Recognition

Celebrated the 17th year of Deemed University status and inaugurated the 2025–2026 academic session.
Received an AAA rating and was listed among India's Best Engineering Institutes 2025.
Students participated in the International Innovation Challenge 2.0 finals.

2026Latest milestones

Student Achievement & Innovation

Aeronautical Engineering students secured second prize in the Drone Challenge at QUEST 2026.
NICHE hosted INCAST–2026 through its Aeronautical Engineering and Aircraft Maintenance Engineering departments.
NICHE continued outreach and student development initiatives, including the Future IAS 2.0 orientation session.
